Last A-B-DC Project Wednesday - Z is for Zengo

This is it. The A-B-DC Project comes to a close this Wednesday. For a number of reasons (geography, Metro-accessibility, happy hour length and specials), I've decided to end the project with Zengo. Located literally on top of the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro stop and within blocks of the orange/blue line, Zengo is about as central as it gets. Zengo also offers special happy-hour prices from 5-8 p.m., with $5 margaritas and mojitos, $5 glasses of wine, and $4 select beers. You can also nosh on $5 Latin-Asian small plates, including pork belly steamed buns, calamari, and Thai chicken empanadas.

Z is for Zengo
781 Seventh Street NW
Wednesday, August 24, 5:30-8 p.m.

Thank you again to all the friends who have made it out for the last 25 (TWENTY-FIVE!!) happy hours and those who cheered us on! I have been glad to share this experiment with you all, and I hope to toast with you this Wednesday!

Cheers!

Wednesday - Y is for Yosaku

The A-B-DC Project is drawing to a close with just two more letters to go. It's been 13 months since we began this alphabetical adventure, and with 24 letters down, I am thankful to all who have joined me for toasts, brews, bites, laughs, and deals all around town.

This Wednesday, we tackle the most difficult letter, a revelation that was a little surprising, but it's true. Some research (thanks again, Suz!), yielded just one restaurant/bar starting with the letter 'Y'. Yosaku Japanese Restaurant offers a selection of beer and other alcoholic beverages, as well as sushi happy hour specials from 5-7:30. Come enjoy the nice selection of nigiri sushi (including mackerel, salmon, squid, shrimp, tuna, crab, and more) starting at just $1 per piece. Since Yosaku is a more traditional restaurant setting (and not a free-flowing bar), please let me know if you plan to attend so we can ensure enough seating.

On August 24, we will officially wrap up the A-B-DC Project. We have several options for the letter 'Z', and I'd like to maximize attendance, so please tell me where you want to go!

Last but not least: Z is for...
Wednesday, August 24, 6-8 p.m.
Tell me where we should go for the very last A-B-DC Project happy hour by voting for your favorite 'Z' bar. We've got options: Zola, Zaytinya, Zengo, Zoo Bar, others?

Cheers!

Quick Recap: V, W, X

I've really fallen down on the job of updating this little space. Here's a brief recap of where we've been lately (V, W, X), with more detailed reviews (with pictures) to come in the future...

V was for Vidalia
Va-va-voom: Vednesday, June 22, was Vidalia! We enjoyed happy hour specials from 5-7 p.m. (half-price select specialty cocktails, wines, and libations and $3.50 select bottle and draft beers). Vidalia also offers Southern "bar bites" for $3 from 5-7 p.m. Their menu features Southern-style comfort food like pork belly sliders, crayfish hushpuppies, BBQ shrimp, or potato chips with blue cheese dip. Or stick closer to home with the Chesapeake truffles (lump crabmeat with lemon-truffle aïoli). You can also get some grocery shopping done by purchasing a five-pound bag of Stanley Farms’ Jumbo #1 Vidalia onions (ask your server; comes with the restaurant's famous baked Vidalia onion recipe).

W was for The Wonderland Ballroom
Everybody loves a three-day holiday weekend, so we extended the fun through mid-week at The Wonderland Ballroom, a neighborhood bar with a District-wide following. Wonderland is too hip to list its happy-hour specials on its website, but according to the Washington Post, deals may include $3 rail drinks, $6 Delirium Tremens beers, and $2 off all drafts from 5-8 p.m. And, of course, Wonderland always has a good selection of drafts, cheap PBR, and a hoppin' patio.

Wednesday, July 6, 6-8 p.m.

X was for The Xchange Saloon
We tackled the letter 'X' with a trip to The Xchange Saloon, billed as "DC's oldest sports saloon." Resting in the shadow of the White House, The Xchange offers what you might expect from a sports bar, lots of big TV's and a full menu of "all-American style foods" (think burgers and nachos). So, we toasted the letter 'X' and the third-to-last alphabetical happy hour!

Just six letter left! Come celebrate U at U-topia Bar & Grill with half-price drinks from 5-7 p.m. Check out the many U-topia martinis on offer. And think of your favorite letter V bars.

Wednesday: T is for Tonic (Mount Pleasant)

This Wednesday, Tonic will cure what ails you! Join us at the Mount Pleasant location (3 blocks from the Columbia Heights station and on the Woodley Park-Adams Morgan-McPherson Square Circulator bus route) for happy-hour specials from 5-7 p.m., including half off burgers, draft beers, and rail drinks, and $5 glasses ($20 bottles) of wine. If you haven't explored Mount Pleasant, you should. This little enclave, wedged between Rock Creek Park and Columbia Heights, has a nice little strip of bars and restaurants. I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for popping next door to take advantage of Radius' $5 "pint and a slice" special (5-7 p.m.) or dropping by the cheap and divey Raven later in the evening.

Wednesday - S is for Science Club & Birthday HH

Wednesday marks yet another letter in the alphabetical happy hour project. S will be for Science Club and will double as a birthday happy hour to celebrate the last year of my 20's. So please join us for periodic table fun and happy hour specials until 8 p.m., including $3 Yuengling, $4 Guinness, Amstel Light, and PBR, $4 spirits, and $5 glasses of wine. Fire up those Bunsen burners for fun and folly this week! And nominate your favs for the letter T on May 18.

Reminder: R is for Rocket Bar

This week R is for Rocket Bar, the centrally located, subterranean entertainment hub, featuring pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, and boardgames. Your favorite space-themed bar features happy hour specials from 4-7 p.m., including $4 draft of the month, glasses of any wine, champagne, and rail cocktails, plus $3 PBRs and $4.50 "pounder cans" (huh?). Champagne and shuffleboard sounds good to me! Hope to see you there, and nominate your favorite 'S' bar for two weeks from now.

R is for Rocket Bar
714 Seventh Street NW
Wednesday, April 20, 6-8 p.m.

L was for Laughing Man Tavern

The Laughing Man Tavern is hidden behind an inconspicuous plate glass window in Metro Center. The facade doesn't tell much about the little downtown gem within.

Laughing Man features two floors of dark wood bars and trim, more than a dozen beers on tap, and fun little touches like built-in bookcases full of classic volumes.

The convenience of Laughing Man's location (G Street, between 13th and 14th) is hard to beat for the downtown after-work crowd. The generous happy hour (3-8 p.m., Monday-Friday) features $3.25 select domestic drafts, $3.75 rail drinks, $4 premium drafts and house wines, and $4 special appetizers. Try the calamari and jerk chicken wings. Plus, Wednesday is 35-cent wing night.

TVs abound in virtually every sight line, so it's not likely you'll miss a play. A small foosball/darts corner in the basement gives added entertainment options, and the nearby private room is popular with organized happy-hour groups.

K was for Kellys' Irish Times

Kellys' Irish Times, with its drifting comma (official sources list it as both "Kelly's and Kellys') and vast collection of patches from police and fire brigades across the country, has the feeling of an unpretentious, blue-collar joint. It may not always be filled with off-duty police officers and fire fighters (it's close proximity to Union Station gives it a decent commuter, after-work crowd), but the friendly bar staff and authentic kitschy decor welcomes you any day. And the occasional live music performances (like it's neighbor The Dubliner) and the jukebox really liven things up, even in the bar's dingiest corners.

Emblazoned above the green awning leading to the bar's front door is the perfectly friendly phrase: "Give me your thirsty, your famished, your befuddled masses." The classic Irish pub feel is rounded out by 60's pop culture memorabilia and lots of Kennedy swag. To poke fun at the absurdity of past sentiments toward the Irish, the Kellys' walls are also full of historic political cartoons with unfavorable depictions of the Irish.

Their website seems a bit out of date, and the bartender had no idea what $3 PBR happy hour special we were referring to, but she honored it nonetheless. And the onion rings were darn good, too.
In the end, who can't love a place with a Family Guy pinball machine, war propaganda posters, a vintage cigarette machine and a Christmas tree all in the same room. Something for everyone!

Wednesday - P is for P.O.V.

Happy spring! Join us this Wednesday to celebrate the start of this optimistic season at a bar with one of the best views in town (maybe you can even spy some cherry blossoms on the horizon...). The P.O.V. rooftop lounge at the W Hotel offers eye candy in the form of sweeping vistas of the White House and the west end of the National Mall. Stop by to sip on a fancy cocktail and enjoy some time lounging on the window-side sofas. I haven't been able to locate details about happy hour specials, but trust me: the views are killer. To kick off April, we'll tackle the letter Q, and surprisingly, we may have a few options for this tough letter. Location for the letter Q is TBA...

Believe or not, there are a couple of options for Q, so I'll work on making the selection in the next week. Let me know if you happen to have a favorite letter Q bar.

Reminder: This Wednesday O is for Ozio

This Wednesday, O is for Ozio, a cigar and martini bar near Dupont. We'll be upstairs (on the smoke-free level) to sip $5 house martinis, $4 house wines, $4 import beers, and $3 domestic beers. Despite the very "clubby" website, Ozio is more of a relaxed lounge atmosphere. Happy hour runs until 8, so stop by for an after-work drink, even if you'll be getting out late. Two weeks from Wednesday join us at P.O.V. at the top of the W Hotel, where the drinks are a little more expensive, but the views of the White House and monuments are priceless.

Reminder: M is for Medaterra

Wednesday marks the alphabetical halfway point in the A-B-DC Project, so I think that calls for a toast or two at Medaterra! This spot has had quite a bit of buzz amongst A-B-DC faithful. Who wouldn't be excited at the prospect of strong, cheap martinis? Medaterra occupies an unassuming storefront just steps from the Woodley Park Metro (a few doors down from the McDonald's and next to the CVS). For the PMFs on this list stopping by the PMF happy hour at Recessions, just hop on the red line at Farragut North and come meet us after. We'll tackle the start of the second half of the alphabet with the letter 'N' in three weeks. Please nominate your favorites!

WEDNESDAY: L is for The Laughing Man Tavern

Welcome back, happy-hour friends,

2011 has been soundly rung in, resolutions are already starting crack, and the events of 2010 are becoming a distant memory. Now is the perfect time to jump back into the alphabetical happy-hour fun! Join us Wednesday at The Laughing Man Tavern in the Metro Center area. Laughing Man has happy hour specials until 8 p.m. that are sure to entice you: $3.25 select domestic drafts, $4 premium drafts, $3.75 rail drinks, $4 house wine, $4 appetizers, and 35-cent wings (and free wifi in case you can’t quite pull yourself away from work).

J was for Jaleo

Jaleo is a casual tapas restaurant and bar brought to you by the renowned Spanish chef/DC restaurateur José Andrés. Andrés’ team is also responsible for popular DC spots Zaytinya, Oyamel, Café Atlantico, and minibar (there’s also a recently opened Jaleo outpost in Vegas). Jaleo, however, is accessible for even the least likely foodie, and the happy hour offerings provide an opportunity to sample some of the restaurant’s most popular small plates at a deep discount.

Located in Chinatown-Penn Quarter neighborhood, Jaleo is just a few blocks of all of DC’s metro lines. “Jaleo hour” specials (4:30-7 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday) include select draft beers (Yuengling, Sierra Nevada, Stella, and New Castle), house red and white wine, and red sangria – all for just $4 each. The sangria was lightly sweet and pleasingly fruity, but $4 actually seemed a little steep for a small highball glass. There’s also the option to try one of Jaleo’s “cocteles especiales,” like the Golden Boy made with Cava, Hidalgo Amontillado Sherry, and actual gold powder flecks ($11).

To compliment the boozy beverages, order a few $4 tapas for the table to share. The calamari and garlicky shrimp (the most popular offering, according to the bartender) were both delicious, but the fried bacon-wrapped dates were simply addictive. Jaleo offers about a dozen specially priced plates during happy hour, so everyone is sure to want to nibble on something.

The atmosphere at Jaleo isn’t particularly impressive, but the giant plate-glass windows on two sides of the dining room make for good people-watching in a busy neighborhood. There are also large Spanish-themed murals on many of the walls and an impressive set of half a dozen full-scale wine-cooling refrigerators near the restrooms.

The curvy, wrap-around elevated bar is the eye-catching center of the restaurant, though be warned that the small space fills up quite quickly toward the end of happy hour (and then empties out just as soon as the prices rise). Also be warned that the service can be painstakingly slow during this time; they don’t seem to have the appropriate number of staff attending to the throngs, at least on the Wednesday we were there. And, perhaps worst of all, the bartender stopped offering the happy hour prices precious minutes before the clocks in the bar area indicated that time was up. He blamed it on the time-stamp feature of Jaleo’s computerized ordering system, but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing to a patron looking forward to one more happy hour-priced cocktail.

Jaleo hour may not be worth the crowds when you just want a quiet cocktail after work, but I’m betting there’s more room to breath and enjoy the happy hour prices on Saturdays and Sundays. And if you don’t get your fill before time expires on a weekday, you can always make the short trek next door to Austin Grill for $5 margaritas until 8 p.m.

I was for Iron Horse Taproom

Iron Horse Taproom is a motorcycle-themed bar tucked between the well-known District Chophouse and one of DC’s many cupcakeries. However, the unassuming exterior does not give much of a hint about the entertainment that lies within. Split between two levels, your initial steps into Iron Horse will give you a taste of the concept – race-themed mural behind the bar, a 1963 Triumph Thunderbird perched on a ledge, and a rack of tires over a Firestone sign. But walk down the stairs on the right side, and you emerge into an expansive lower level with more motorcycle décor and lots of arcade-style games to keep you busy.

Iron Horse offers a rotating selection of 20 beers on tap (check their website for the latest). Happy hour specials include $2 off draughts (most are $5-7 before the discount) and $5 rail drinks. I suggest checking out the latest seasonal offering. Or stop by on the last Wednesday of every month for the “craft beer battle” -- $1 shots of beer, $5 pints, and the winning beer stays on tap as Iron Horse’s “beer of the month.”

If you’re bored or just waiting for your friends, pull up a bar stool and gaze at the impressive collage of news clippings and pop culture art embedded in the bar. It makes for a colorful and conversation-inspiring place to rest your pint.

When you’ve got a small group, check out the skeeball machines (always a crowd pleaser), or try one of the cozy, tucked-away nooks for a quiet conversation.

The motorcycle theme is well-represented on the lower level with a wall full of mounted oil drums, motorcycle art on the walls, a Harley Davidson pinball machine, and half a dozen bikes suspended on narrow ledges overhead.

The creative theme and diverse, long list of beers make Iron Horse an excellent place for an after-work happy hour or a couple of drinks before you head to the Verizon Center to cheer on the Caps or Wizards.
